The Baumgartner family from the district of Eferding (Upper Austria) has set the course for the future: With the construction of a low-emission PigPort 3 animal welfare barn, they have successfully made the transition to closed pig production. Together with Hütthalers Hofkultur as their marketing partner, they have created a barn for 500 fattening pigs and 120 pre-fattening pigs that perfectly combines animal welfare, environmental friendliness and economic efficiency.

Low-emission technology for a clean stable climate

The PigPort 3 stable has been equipped with faeces-urine separation in the underfloor channels – a measure that reduces ammonia and odour emissions by around 50%. Thanks to its installation on a slope, the soil also acts as insulation: in summer, the lying area remains cool, while in winter it stays at a pleasant temperature.

The lying area is equipped with heated boxes and underfloor heating, supplemented by thermal covers for the pre-fattening area. The thermally insulated roll-up tarpaulin provides flexible ventilation in summer and protection in winter.

Animal-friendly feeding with Spotmix

The animals are fed using Spotmix multi-phase feeding. Each pen receives a feed mixture tailored to its needs, which is dispensed directly via dry feed dispensers. The maize is freshly ground in the whole grain silo and mixed with the feed components. This saves feed costs and reduces protein surpluses – a win for the environment and the farm.
